15 Jul How to make electronic music?
“Electronic music” is a term that refers to music resulting from the use of a synthesizer. When traditional instruments play a role in electronics, they serve as background accompaniment to complement (and not overpower) synthesizers. You can make electronic music at home by following his creative inspiration and some recommended steps.
You will need:
- USB MIDI keyboard
- Audio recording software
- Digital recording software
- Stereo cables
- MIDI cables
Steps to make electronic music
Invest in a versatile keyboard synthesizer
If your budget can handle the additional equipment, you can enrich your electronic sound by investing in other electronic instruments, such as a drum machine or sampler. As a cheaper alternative, you can generate electronic music by downloading a digital audio workstation to your computers (this is required anyway for recording), such as Logic, GarageBand, or Reason. You will also need a MIDI controller keyboard with a connected USB cable.
Connect your team
If you choose the cheapest route, connect the MIDI controller to your PC and install the recording software (if you haven’t already installed it). To connect a synthesizer to the computer, you have several options. It can be connected via a MIDI cable, but a USB MIDI interface is required to connect to your PC. You can use a 1/4 “to 1/8” inch music cable and connect to your “Line-In” computer. However, it will only give you monophonic sound quality. For best results, connect an audio interface (sold in music stores) to your PC, and connect the synthesizer to the interface using stereo cables.
Open your recording software and create a track for recording.
A track is simply a layer of music. You can record as many layers as necessary (for example percussion, bass and melody would be made up of three layers). You can find the “New Track” option in the menu bar. If you are asked to choose a type of tracks, select “Audio” for stereo connections, or select “MIDI” for MIDI connections. Sometimes “MIDI” will read “software Track” or “instrument track”.
Choose a program for recording
A patch is just a sound setting on the synthesizer, such as deep bass, a shiny keyboard lead, or a smooth, harmonic pad. If you understand synthesizers, you can create your patches by adjusting the oscillators and filters. Otherwise, just use the presets in the synthesizer menu. If you are using a MIDI keyboard instead of a synthesizer, select patches with your computer software, accessible from the Track Options panel.
Record your first layer of music on the track you created earlier
For example, you can set a continuous bass line or start with an electronic drumbeat to adjust it. After you have selected the patch, just press the “Burn” button in your software window. Press the “Stop” button when recording ends. You now have your first layer of audio. Unlike more rigid genres, electronics encompasses different styles and influences, so feel free to explore different types of rhythms and melodies with electronic sounds.
Create a second track and add your second music layer
For example, if you have created drum tapping on the first track, you can add a bass echo line on the second track. Continue in this manner until your song ends. Unlike traditional music, which relies on a small series of instruments to create music, electronics is a layered style, sometimes with dozens of overlapping recordings. Add as many tracks as necessary to create a rich electronic arrangement.
Check audio interface
An audio interface is an element that converts digital information into analog and analog to digital, that is, information from your computer (binary code, zeros and ones) to details to electricity, in this case, sound.
All computers have an integrated audio interface that is why you can play music and listen to them with your speakers or connect your headphones. However, those who make computers do not specialize in computers for music creation. This is why the integrated audio interface is for most people who only need to listen to music or make a call.
We need it for a much more specific task, which is creating music, which is why having an external audio interface is one of the best ideas. It converts that digital signal from the computer, in the best possible way, into sound.
